Project Goal

This heuristic evaluation was conducted as part of the NUX project, a mobile streaming and learning app designed for Rekha Marr, a busy lifelong learner who values quick access to relevant content and clear learning pathways. Before designing the app, the goal was to evaluate how an existing learning platform supports or fails users with similar needs.

Why Allison?

Alison was selected because it closely mirrors Rekha's learning habits, a mobile-first platform offering free courses across a wide range of subjects. Its large course library, structured content, and video-based lessons made it an ideal candidate for studying how users navigate and complete learning tasks.

Over the course of this evaluation, I identified five key usability issues, mapped each to Nielsen's 10 heuristics, assessed their severity, and proposed actionable design improvements. These findings directly informed the NUX project — shaping its navigation structure, visual hierarchy, and overall learning experience.

Summary

The Alison app shows major usability issues, mainly visual clutter and inconsistency across screens. These problems increase cognitive load, slow navigation, and frustrate users, while unclear progress tracking reduces trust and overall learning comfort.
